Shocking Auto-Rickshaw Incident in Delhi: Woman Warns Others After Near Kidnapping

{A woman in Delhi had a very scary morning when her ride in an auto-rickshaw took a frightening turn. She shared her experience on Reddit, sparking widespread concern about safety for those relying on ride-hailing apps and autos.

What Happened

Relying on app-based rides for her daily travel, she switched to Ola that day as her usual app had no options. A few minutes into the ride, the driver suddenly stopped, claiming his phone wasn’t working to see the way. Unbeknownst to her, he had ended the trip in the app, so tracking stopped completely.

Soon after, the driver turned onto a road that felt completely wrong, triggering alarm bells in her mind. Signs indicated they were moving opposite to her office, toward a distant area almost two hours away, far longer than her normal 30-45-minute commute.

Despite her protests, the driver kept insisting Google Maps was guiding that way, while speeding along major roads where she couldn’t safely get out.

Thankfully, she texted her partner, who swiftly called and pressured the driver to return. After a tense exchange and her even considering jumping out, the driver finally turned back near her home, without asking for any money, and sped off. She and her partner became convinced this was an attempted kidnapping, as the driver didn’t even want payment.

Shaken by the event, she found Ola’s safety response lacking, with no real complaint process besides telling her to call authorities.

Similar events have surfaced recently, with Delhi police noting multiple cases of dangerous auto driver behavior, including suspected abductions. Another incident involved a teenage girl in Thane who managed to escape by jumping from a running auto, aided by a compass.

Public Reaction on Reddit

Her Reddit account received dozens of shocked responses, with people commenting things like, “Horrifying!” and “That’s terrifying”. Some suggested she lodge a police complaint and pressure Ola via social media to take action.

Many chipped in with personal experiences and suggestions:

• Have your keys ready to defend yourself if needed.
• Announce your path over a call or have maps playing aloud to alert the driver someone is aware.
• Choose metro travel instead of booking autos when alone if feasible.
• Stay away from Ola due to its lack of proper safety tools.

Her Must-Know Solo Travel Safety Guidelines

Avoid Booking Autos Alone When Possible: Booking alone can be risky as you can’t always know the driver.
Confirm Auto’s Plate Matches the App: Only get in if the plate matches the app listing.
Ensure the Trip Is Active Before Entering: Enter only after the driver enters your OTP and the trip begins.
Monitor the Ride on Your Phone: Keep the app open to see if the trip gets stopped.
Share Your Location: Let a family member or friend track your trip live.
Position Yourself for Quick Exit: Sit on the open side to escape quickly if required.
Know Your Route: Use ride services only when you know the route well.
Verify Driver’s Path Live: Use live navigation to confirm correct directions.
Know Where Help Is Available: Be self-love and money conscious of where help is nearby.
Do Not Use Ola Due to Safety Gaps: She strongly advised avoiding Ola due to poor safety and weak complaint systems.

This event highlights the pressing demand for better driver verification, constant ride tracking, and effective emergency assistance from ride-hailing services.
